On the Water Conditions

Get prepared and paddle ready!

Planning a paddle? Before you head out, it’s always good to check what the conditions are doing as checking the wind and sea state can make all the difference to your paddle.

We’ve pulled together some handy links to real-time local info so you can make smart, safe decisions and enjoy your time on the water.

Here’s what we recommend keeping an eye on:

Check the Wind Right Now

Get real-time data on wind speed, direction, and wind gusts straight from wind gauges close to the Port. Look at the wind readings for the Fairway Beacon, 5km out to sea in front of Tahunanui Beach. This is the best source for what’s actually happening out on the water right now.

Look at the Webcams of the Water

Want to see it for yourself? View the live webcams looking out from Port Nelson in to the cut and Haulashore Island, and looking into the harbour.  This will give you a visual check on sea state, chop and conditions before you load up your board.

Check the Weather Forecast

As well as the live wind feeds, check the weather forecast to see if it is likely to change. Be aware of building wind, gusts, rain, and thunder and lightening.

Read the Tides

Tahunanui Beach is paddle-able in any tide cycle and at any stage of the tide so you will be safe with the tides if you stay close in the bay. If you want to paddle further afield out to Fifeshire Rock or Haulashore Island, you will need to plan your paddle with the tides and be aware of the tide cycle.

Paddle Safe

We always recommend checking:

  • Wind strength and direction (avoid offshore winds at all costs)
  • Tide times and tide cycles

If in doubt, come check it out before you get on the water, stay close to shore and enjoy a coffee or a beach walk if you are unsure. There’s no shame in playing it safe.
